The technology debate – is technology in schools good or bad? I confess that I have sometimes wondered if technology is ruining our classroom learning environments. Are basic skills being replaced by technology? Through meaningful discussions with other teachers in my course, I have come to realize that technology can enhance or hinder. Success depends on how the technology is used. Teaching in the 21st century does not mean replacing basic skills with technology. It means integrating technology in ways that increase engagement, differentiate learning, require higher order thinking skills and improve learning. The skills listed in the 21st Century taxonomy are skills that have always been important but are even more necessary in today’s technological age. Critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and citizenship are the 5 C’s required for the 21st learner.
